Hong Kong lawyers under 40 shine in legal talent spotlight
Natalie Yuen Yuen Chan, 34, a partner at Robertsons with dual Hong Kong and England & Wales qualifications.

Now in its fourth year, Asian Legal Business highlights Hong Kong’s brightest emerging legal talent. The selection focuses on lawyers under 40 who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, sharp legal acumen, and innovative approaches to client service, cementing their status as the profession’s future leaders.

Cross-border capital-raising expertise

Natalie Yuen Yuen Chan, 34, is a partner at Robertsons. Qualified in Hong Kong and England and Wales, the attorney brings seven years of experience guiding firms through public offerings and cross-border financing.

In the past twelve months the partner headed a series of Nasdaq market entries for issuers based in Asia. The roster included a Hong Kong event-management firm, a Singapore engineering services company, a Japanese lifestyle-entertainment group and a Hong Kong fitness and wellness operator that raised roughly US$6.1 million. This string of four U.S. market debuts within months demonstrates her role in managing regulatory hurdles and investor outreach.

Her track record also spans numerous public offerings on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. She worked on a Singapore food-and-beverage venture that secured about HK$100 million, a local construction-services provider and a Singapore automotive retail business. She has also overseen transitions from the Growth Enterprise Market to the Main Board.

Beyond the equity arena, Chan advises a broad client base that includes long-standing Hong Kong-listed firms, showing her reach across both emerging issuers and established enterprises. The partner helped launch a Singapore heavy-construction equipment supplier on the New York Stock Exchange and has coordinated Nasdaq launches for firms in Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Her involvement extends to firm governance; she was chosen as a founding member of Robertsons’ internal Business Development and Marketing Committee, reflecting contributions that go beyond courtroom work.

While Chan’s achievements are impressive, the broader market context suggests that firms with strong cross-border capabilities will likely continue to attract capital from overseas investors seeking exposure to Asian growth stories.

Real-estate leadership

Christy Ip, 31, recently became a partner at Zhong Lun Law Firm, making her the firm’s youngest home-grown partner after just five and a half years of practice.

She focuses on project conveyancing for both residential and commercial developments, handling consent and non-consent schemes. Since 2018 she has led more than twenty sales projects, ranging from high-rise apartments to office towers.

Ip also advises major developers, statutory bodies, listed corporations and state-owned enterprises on land acquisitions, leasing, government-grant matters and property disputes. Since 2022 she has acted as the lead external solicitor for a Hong Kong statutory body, overseeing strategic land grants to innovation and technology firms with aggregate premiums over HK$2 billion.

One notable transaction involved a state-owned enterprise’s purchase of an entire commercial building in Hong Kong for roughly HK$800 million. Clients commend her for a pragmatic approach and the ability to devise commercially effective solutions to complex real-estate challenges.

Since 2024 she has served on two working parties under the Law Society’s Property Committee, reviewing Non-Consent Scheme forms and revised DMC Guidelines. Her work with senior practitioners contributes to the evolution of transaction documentation and regulatory frameworks governing Hong Kong property development.

Litigation leadership and pro bono commitment

Yezdi Jal Karbhari, who heads the litigation practice at Jal N. Karbhari, Solicitors & Notary, has built a reputation for handling detailed commercial disputes across the region. With 10 years of practice, he combines civil recovery tactics with insolvency procedures to secure enforceable outcomes for creditors, a strategy that has proven effective in high-stakes cross-border cases.

Recent matters include advising a major insurance group on event-risk management and liability issues for public gatherings, as well as obtaining judgments that enabled winding-up actions to recover substantial arrears. His portfolio also features successful debt-recovery actions for a Dubai-based beauty products trader, a Miami luxury watch company, and a Singapore semiconductor startup that fell victim to online fraud. In addition, he guided a multinational finance firm headquartered in Bangladesh through complex Hong Kong tax and regulatory compliance matters.

Recognition for his dedication to access to justice comes in the form of multiple Gold Pro Bono Awards from the Law Society of Hong Kong. Beyond courtroom victories, he established an internship and mentorship programme aimed at ethnic-minority communities and university students, expanding the pipeline of diverse talent into the legal profession.

Emerging expertise in fintech and digital assets

Mary Lam, a managing associate at Timothy Loh LLP, has built her eight-year legal career spanning financial services regulatory work, corporate and mergers and acquisitions, dispute resolution, and trust matters.

Over the past year, Lam advised the administrator of a deceased high-net-worth businessman’s estate on recovering assets misappropriated by trustees acting in breach of trust. The matter required handling parallel proceedings across Asia and the United States, securing gagging and anonymity orders to protect a sensitive asset-tracing exercise, and overcoming limitation-period challenges.

Winnie Tang, a consultant at Eric Chow & Co., brings a strong track record in corporate finance and Hong Kong IPOs. She has contributed to more than fifteen listings, including technology and construction firms, and recently served as sponsor counsel for a tightly timed public offering of a Qingdao-based technology company. Her role in a spin-off listing for a mainland-listed aluminium producer highlighted her ability to manage complex underwriter negotiations.

Earlier in her career, Tang led an asset restructuring valued at roughly CNY5 billion for a state-owned aviation conglomerate, coordinating multiple stakeholders across jurisdictions. She also advised a local fitness chain on a private-equity infusion exceeding a significant Hong Kong-dollar threshold, demonstrating her skill in aligning capital-raising strategies with regulatory requirements.
